When is the Best Time of Day to Mow Your Lawn?
There are good times and bad times to mow your lawn and some times of the day are better than others. There are multiple factors that you may wish to consider when you are thinking about the best time of day to cut grass.
The heat, the level of moisture and the time are all factors you may wish to keep in mind. So, bearing all that in mind, let’s take a look at the best time of day to cut the grass.
Early morning is one of the worst times to mow your lawn. The grass will still be wet from dew, and wet grass could cause your mower to clog up. Also, if your turf is wet from a torrential downpour, your mower may end up leaving tracks in the turf or could end up damaging it.
Mid-morning is by far the best time to get cutting that grass. Any moisture left behind from the morning dew will have dried off, so you won’t have any problems with a clogged-up mower. It’s best to mow before the heat of the day sets in and your grass will have plenty of time to dry off fully in the sun.
The middle of the day is an alright time to cut your grass as it will be drier, but mowing a lawn in hot weather is hard work. In the middle of the day, the sun is going to be at its hottest, and too much heat can cause stress to your lawn when you are cutting it. Plus, it’s much harder on the person mowing the lawn!
Early afternoon is the second-best time to cut the grass as the cooler temperatures mean less stress on you, and less stress on the lawn. There is still enough sun left in the day to provide your grass with some light, giving your lawn a few hours to recover.
The early evening isn’t the best time to mow your lawn, but equally, it isn’t the worst. Cutting your grass in the night doesn’t give your lawn much time to recover before nightfall. At night, your lawn is most susceptible to diseases and types of fungus which can damage your lawn. Giving your grass time to recover will help protect it from this.
The time of year you are mowing your lawn will also make a difference to your strategy. People often ask us questions like “when should I mow my lawn in the spring?”.
In the Spring, you should be often mowing (weekly is best) and in the Summer, around every two weeks. In Autumn, due to the rain, there will be increased growth, so keep mowing regularly. As we move into the Winter, there will be little growth, so you probably need to mow.
Also, make sure you have the right lawn mower for the job. Trying to cut your grass when the blades on your mower aren’t sharp will make it a lot harder and less efficient.
